My First 3D Pumpkin Carving

For FHE last night we all got together and carved our pumpkins.
This is something that the kids and I look forward to every year.  This year though I thought I would try something different.  I've been watching Halloween wars on HGTV
(I think that's the station)
and was so inspired by the pumpkin carvers
that I thought I would try to make a 3D pumpkin face.

Here it is.
(not anywhere close to those real carver's pumpkins, but can get better)

It was quite the challenge.
I think that if I try this again next year I will have to invest in some proper tools.  I had a small knife and a nail to scrape some details.

I covered it in Vaseline to slow down  drying out, looks like it's covered in slime.
Gross.

I think I would also have a picture of what I want to carve,
make it easier to know where things go.

Here are the kids carvings.

This kitty turned out so cute.

My younget really wanted to do his own.
So we drew on a monster and he painted it in.

Lots of fun.
I love how the kids were so excited to each have their own and how determined they were to do it by themselves.

Day of the Dead Makeup

This weekend was crazy.
1 Halloween Party
3 Basketball games
1 Play practice
and
1 Belated birthday party.
oh and...
(1 temple dedication on Sunday)

On Friday we had the Halloween party to go to and that meant two
"day of the dead"
 makeup  applications.

We also had a late night
 "NERD"
birthday party for one of our girls.

This was my first attempt at a layered cake.
I think it turned out OK.  It didn't fall over so that was a bonus.

The girls loved the surprise inside.
I was nervous to try and do all 8 colours of the rainbow, so they got four.
They didn't notice.

Fun weekend, but very busy.

Next week just has to be more relaxing.

I've Been Unionized

I swear I love
Canada
it's an amazing place to live,
but I do believe my British roots are showing.

OK, I know that I have to look way back on the family tree to claim English blood,
but it's there and it just doesn't want to be ignored.

This is my third
UNION JACK
piece.
(and I'll make no promises that this is my last).

Started off with a  grey base.

Laid out my flag with tape,
I swear I have a Bachelor's Degree in this and yes you can hire me if you want one done.

Painted it with leftover paint from my dresser

Loved the crisp lines, but wanted to try something a little different.

So I added dark wax which dirty and aged it up.

I love how it looks now, very old world.

I really should keep one of these Union Jack pieces then maybe I'll stop making them.

Rock Monsters

So I fell in love with these
on pinterest and just had to have the kids try to make their own.

So,
after a 2 hour nature walk to collect the rocks
base coat for colour
faces drawn
teeth painted
a coat of poly acrylic for shine and durability
and a hunt to 3 stores to find googly eyes.

Here they are.

The whole group.

I love how expressive the faces are.

My youngest thought his needed hair, so out came the pom poms.

They love playing with them, although you shouldn't play with them on your solid wood table without a mat underneath.
Don't ask.....
just take my advice.

All of these guys are going to lead the way up to our
MONSTER
themed door on Halloween.

*Joke*
Q: What type of monster really loves dance music?
A: The boogieman!

Faux Bone Inlay

I have always been drawn to furniture with
bone inlay

and so I finally decided to do a piece with a nod to that technique.

First I edged the drawers in light grey and then started with my interior lines.
(sorry about the flash it was late and there was no natural light)

Now onto the pattern.
There are tons to pick from.

Lots of leaf and flower motifs.
I went with a heart leaf and flower one.

Finally broke down and bought some
Frog Tape

It did really give a nice line with way less bleeding.

I was tempted to paint the whole thing like the
bone inlay furniture
that has it all over, but decided to just give a little accent to the drawers.

I coated the whole thing in a poly acrylic for durability and a little shine.

I do love how it gave some life to these plain flat drawers.
